Thomas Moore Rickards

                          Thomas Moore Rickards

Alex Haniff

Today was a great day, I want to begin by saying that because today I learned about a very important Floridian by the name of Thomas Moore Rickards and have the great privilege of planting a garden in the remembrance of him and his contribution to Boca Raton. I chose to plant the garden in front of the Boca Train Museum because The Florida East Coast Railroad (FEC) hired Rickards to promote the area to farmers who would ship their produce on the FEC, so I thought what a perfect location. I knew I wanted to plant it in the city of Boca because Thomas Moore Rickards was Bocas very first settler, so it was worth the drive. Rickards produced the very first survey of Boca Raton, because of this survey Boca was subdivided from several hundred acres to ten-acre tracts. Planting the site in front of the train museum was very symbolic to me because I learned that Thomas Moore was very educated and studied engineering. The train station museum has a lot of amazing history about Boca Raton and I wanted to plant that garden there because Thomas Moore was the very beginning of anything in that city.
