Garden 474 Jose Marti

Posted By Cristina M. Caycedo, Sunday, April 20, 2014

Friendship Park Waterstone Way Homestead FL 33033

Jose Marti was a Cuban born native who dedicated his life to the promotion of liberty, political independence for Cuba, and intellectual independence for all Spanish Americans. A renaissance man of his time, Marti was a poet, philosopher; political activist, journalist and professor amongst other things. Marti was essential in the unification of the exiled Cuban community in Florida as well as other regions of the United States which led to the ultimate success of the Cuban War of Independence from Spain. Marti was also chosen to be a delegate for the development of the Cuban Revolutionary Party and its ideologies. Jose Marti died in battle on May 19, 1985 fighting at the Battle of Dios Rios for Cuban Independence from Spain. This garden is dedicated to the memory of Cuban native Jose Marti at Friendship Park because of the great achievements he accomplished throughout his life and for his devotion and dedication to the Cuban as well as the overall Hispanic community for generations to come. Overall, I found this project to be a very rewarding experience and one that I am glad to have been a part of in celebrating the history of my home state as well as having the chance to celebrate Florida’s quincentennial (2013) in a creative and informative way.
