225 Spessard Lindsey Holland

Posted By Jazmin Youngblood, Monday, April 21, 2014

My professor informed the class that we would have a visitor that will tell us about the FLOR 500 project, we soon would participate in it. I was very eager to learn what kind of project our class would be doing. Xavier Cortada explained the task and I patiently waited to see which Floridian I would plant a garden for. I knew this would be a fun and educational assignment.  FLOR 500 allowed me to be creative and brush up on my gardening skills. It furthermore gave me the chance to spend time with my Grandmother; she helped me with this project. The important Floridian who was assigned to me was Spessard Lindsey Holland. Through research I found out that he served many duties in his lifetime. He fulfilled roles such as a World War I hero, Prosecuting Attorney, County Judge, State Senate, and Governor. I took the artistic approach to make a poster to commemorate his life.  I thought it was best to design the poster in a way to show his accomplishments, so that his works could be acknowledged to the public. There were many options to choose where to plant the garden at. I dedicated a garden to Spessard Holland at Memorial Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Opa-Locka, Florida. My reasoning being that his family helped organized a church in Bartow, Florida. Plants, like church and family, grow from a structured and strong foundation. Also, it was easier to navigate from home to church and back home.
