Bertha Palmer

Myakka River State Park
13208 State Road 72, Sarasota, FL 34241

Bertha Palmer was an American socialite, businesswoman, and philanthropist. She liked Florida’s climate during the winter so in 1910, she bought 80,000 acres of land in Sarasota, Florida and even bought 19,000 acres of land in Temple Terrance, Florida in 1914. Although she had homes located in Chicago, Paris, London, and Newport, her main home was Florida because she fell in love with the area. I dedicated this garden to this important Floridian Bertha Palmer in the Myakka River State Park because of her many contributions to the city of Sarasota, Florida. Her love for Sarasota was strong so she went out and shaped it into the community it is today. Ever since she moved to Sarasota in 1910 she started to improve the community right away by purchasing large amounts of acres and real estate. After her death, most of her land was donated in Sarasota County which turned into what is now Myakka River State Park so it makes perfect sense as to why I would want to have planted it here. I brought a friend with me to help and we were able to snap a photo of a certain part at the park where it was acceptable to plant the seed. Bertha Palmer has done a lot for the land that she had purchased. None of it would be what it is today without the contributions of Bertha Palmer.
