FLOR500 (www.flor500.comis a participatory art, nature, and history project created by Miami artist Xavier Cortada to commemorate Florida’s quincentennial in 2013. The project marks the importance of the moment when the history of our state changed forever and gives us a glimpse of what its landscape was like 500 years ago, when Ponce de Leon named our state "La Florida," from "flor" the Spanish word for flower.

During the fair, FLOR500 project participants will be able to take home one of 500 original art pieces (4" x 4" charcoal drawings depicting wildflowers) hanging in an installation on the booth wall (only one per household during the entire fair) if at home they promise to plant the accompanying small envelope of native wildflower seeds.

The FLOR500 participants will dedicate the garden to someone who has lived in Florida anytime in the last 500 years (e.g., a historic figure, a family member, etc.). Participants will be asked to upload a photo of themselves planting their wildflower garden using the upload link of the project website.

FLOR500 is presented by the Florida International University College of Architecture + The Arts | Office of Engaged Creativity (www.carta.fiu.edu/engaged).

At the Arteaméricas booth, the office is also presenting FIU Landscape Architecture Chair Roberto Rovira's Ecological Atlas Project, which seeks to develop an intuitive design tool to visualize how ecosystems (and in this case wildflowers) change over time.
