North Pole Installation:
Surrender the White Flag
360 White Flags
Russian custom officials in Murmansk did not allow Cortada to enter the flags for the Endangered World installation into the country.
Although they were told the flags were to be used for an environmental art project in the North Pole, the officials insisted that customs
rules prohibited them from entering the country.
On June 24th, 2008, after spending over two hours in customs office, Cortada boarded the icebreaker at Murmansk without the flags. By the time he arrived at 90 degrees North on June 29th, he had developed an alternative way of reclaiming the North Pole for nature and the 360 endangered species in the world below.
