About the Artist

Prem Subrahmanyam is a software engineer by profession, but his passion is the many native species of orchids that grow in our state of Florida.  An avid, award-winning photographer, Prem often trudges out in the fields, marshes, and swamps to photograph Florida's wild orchids in situ.  His website, www.flnativeorchids.com , shows off many of his photographs, combined with scientific and anecdotal information on many of our native orchid species.  He also lectures on native orchids, and his presentations have been well-received at many orchid and plant societies and clubs all over the state.  He will be giving his second native orchid presentation at the upcoming 2013 Native Plant Society Conference in Jacksonville.

Artist's Statement

I have had the privilege of seeing this uncommon variant of this orchid in the field, having photographed it several years ago.  It is truly a magical orchid when you see it in person, the largest flower of any Habenaria relative in the United States.  I did this piece in chalk pastel on black recycled art paper with 30% post consumer content.
