FLOR500 is a participatory art, nature, and history project that marks the importance of the moment when the history of Florida changed forever and gives a glimpse of what its landscape was like 500 years ago. Developed by Xavier Cortada, director and artist-in-residence of FIU’s College of Architecture + The Arts’ Office of Engaged Creativity, the project commemorates Florida’s quincentenary in 2013.
I have been residing in Fort Myers, Florida (Southwest
Florida) since late 1988, originally from Texas. I have had a camera in my hand for over 30
years, shooting professionally for over 25.
Add in an undergraduate degree (1983), as well as two years of graduate
studies in photography at Sam Houston State University - Huntsville, Texas.
(1988).
Artist's Statement
‘I don’t just take a picture, frame it and call it art. Rather I would like to think that I capture a
moment, and create an experience.’
I am diversified with my career, shooting Commercial and Fashion, but I prefer my Photographic Fine Art the most within what I do. I relish the excitement as I anticipate the results of every shoot and/or creative moment I have...just like it was the first time.
Five hundred Florida artists are sought to create art for FLOR500, a participatory art, nature, and history project that marks the importance of the moment when the history of Florida changed forever and gives a glimpse of what its landscape was like 500 years ago. Developed by Xavier Cortada, director and artist-in-residence of FIU’s College of Architecture + The Arts’ Office of Engaged Creativity, the project commemorates Florida’s quincentenary in 2013.
