Norma Delgado, "FLOR 479: Corkystem Passionflower(Passiflora suberosa) ," oil on canvas 11" x 14", 2012 (CC).
About the Artist:
I was born in Havana, Cuba and came to the United States in 1962 as part of the Pedro Pan program which brought Cuban children to the USA without their parents. I worked for the Miami Dade County Schools for 35 years and recently retired. I started taking oil painting classes 5 years ago and I have found it to be both challenging and rewarding. I would like to paint more images that depict the flora and fauna of Florida.

Artist Statement:
I started painting because I wanted to write and paint illustrations to my writing. However, painting has become more absorbing than writing. It is a path to self improvement that provides a challenge and a degree of personal accomplishment. I have a great respect for nature and I believe no artist can create anything that compares to the pure beauty of what God has created. I stop to watch sunsets and the graceful run of a squirrel for these are fleeting moments in life that, try as we may, we cannot recreate. |
Five hundred Florida artists are sought to create art for FLOR500, a participatory art, nature, and history project that marks the importance of the moment when the history of Florida changed forever and gives a glimpse of what its landscape was like 500 years ago. Developed by Xavier Cortada, director and artist-in-residence of FIU’s College of Architecture + The Arts’ Office of Engaged Creativity, the project commemorates Florida’s quincentenary in 2013.
