She and her husband designed an ornamental garden on their hunting estate in Leon County. After Alfred died in 1944, Louise opened the 28-acre garden to the public. In 1953, she donated 307 acres to the state. It became the Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park in Tallahassee.
