He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1924, taught law school briefly, and set up a law practice in Perry, Florida. He was elected first to the Florida House of Representatives, and then served as U.S. senator from Florida from 1936 to 1951, and in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1963 until his death in 1989. While in office, he became known as a strong advocate for the elderly.

Claude Pepper was born in Alabama. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1924, taught law school briefly, and set up a law practice in Perry, Florida.
