FLOR500, Garden 135 Fray Martín Prieto, Franciscan Missionary (?–ca. 1620s) Fray Prieto was a Franciscan missionary in early seventeenth-century, Spanish Florida. He saw the continuous warfare between the Apalachee and western Timucua Indians as a hindrance to converting the western Timucuans to Christianity. He went to Apalachee province, met with Apalachee’s leaders and successfully brokered peace between the two groups. The peace he helped establish paved the way for friars to begin missionary efforts among the western Timucua, and later the Apalachee.
