FLOR500, Garden 137 John Elias Proctor, Educator, Politician (1844–1944) John Elias Proctor was born into slavery in Leon County. After slavery, he taught in rural schools of Leon County. During Reconstruction, he served as a state representative from 1873 to 1875 and again in 1879. He also served as a senator in 1883 and 1885. His father, George Proctor, built many of the historic homes in today’s downtown Tallahassee Historic District.

John Elias Proctor, Educator, Politician 

(1844–1944)

John Elias Proctor was born into slavery in Leon County. After slavery, he taught in rural schools of Leon County.
