FLOR500, Garden 138 John Gilmore Riley, Educator and Businessman (1857–1954) John Gilmore Riley was born into slavery in Leon County. After slavery, he became an educator and the first African American principal of Lincoln Academy (later high school) where he served from 1893 to 1926. He also amassed large real estate holdings. He was Secretary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and served many other humanitarian causes. His home, built in 1890 in the once thriving black neighborhood of Smokey Hollow in downtown Tallahassee, is the only restored African American historic house in Leon County, and is open to the public.
