FLOR500, Garden 140 George Washington Scott, Confederate Civil War Officer, Businessman (1829–1903) During the Civil War, Scott served as the commander of the 5th Florida Cavalry Battalion and played a key role in the Confederate defense at the Battle of Natural Bridge south of Tallahassee. After the war, he ran unsuccessfully for governor in the 1868 contest. Moving to Georgia, Scott created a very successful business using Florida phosphate to make fertilizer.
