FLOR500, Garden 141 Hernando de Soto, Explorer (?–1542) Spanish explorer, Hernando de Soto landed near Tampa Bay, Florida, in May 1539. He and his expedition traveled north, and spent the winter of 1539–1540 camped at Anhaica, an Apalachee Indian village on the site of present-day Tallahassee. They explored the Southeast, and were the first Europeans to cross the Mississippi River. De Soto died near the river in 1542.

Hernando de Soto, Explorer

(?–1542)

Spanish explorer, Hernando de Soto landed near Tampa Bay, Florida, in May 1539.
