FLOR500, Garden 144 Sergeant Ernest “Boots” Thomas, World War II Soldier (1924–1945) Ernest “Boots” Thomas graduated from Monticello High School in 1941. The next year, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. Sergeant Thomas led the patrol that planted the first American flag on Mount Suribachi in Iwo Jima, during a battle for the island in early 1945. This achievement was overshadowed by a second, highly-publicized flag-raising later the same day. Thomas was later killed in combat on Iwo Jima. His family received the Navy Cross for his service.
