FLOR500, Garden 148 C. Bette Wimbish, Politician (1924–2009) Wimbish was born in Perry, Florida. She graduated from Florida A&M University Law School. In 1969, she became the first black person elected to the St. Petersburg City Council where she served until 1973. She was vice mayor during her last two years on the City Council. Governor Reuben Askew appointed her as Deputy Secretary of the Florida Department of Commerce.
