FLOR500, Garden 156 Wellington Cummer, Businessman (1846–1908) Cummer was born in Canada and lived in Cadillac, Michigan, for many years until business opportunities brought him and his family to Florida. After acquiring land with pine trees, he opened two sawmills in Jacksonville in 1896. He built his own railroad—eighty miles of track—to aid in the distribution of his lumber. His sons were involved in the family business as well, which, at its height, employed 425 people in Jacksonville.
