FLOR500, Garden 158 Sir Francis Drake, Privateer (1545–1596) Drake was an English corsair, or privateer, who provoked the ire of Spaniards with his slave raids and attacks on Spanish property in the Caribbean in the 16th century. In Florida, he raided St. Augustine in 1586 and destroyed the wooden fort. His raid on St. Augustine is depicted in a colorful map (ca. 1589), which is the oldest document in the State Archives of Florida.
