He was a world traveler, lecturer, poet, and editor of the Yale Literary Magazine. He came to DeFuniak Springs with the first assembly of the Chautauqua and ultimately decided to make his home there. Bruce spearheaded the construction of the Chautauqua Hall of Brotherhood, a building that offered the town and the Chautauqua Assembly a venue for cultural events.
