FLOR500, Garden 186 Denys Rolle, Landowner (ca. 1725–1797) A wealthy Englishman, Rolle invested in Florida during the British colonial period and received a land grant of several thousand acres along the St. Johns River. He brought over white indentured servants from England to develop the property, but many of them died or ran away. The servants were eventually replaced by enslaved Africans, who engaged in rice cultivation and other development endeavors. Rolle continued to obtain property in East Florida until 1784.
