FLOR500, Garden 195 Eartha White, Humanitarian (1876–1974) Jacksonville native Eartha White was a humanitarian and philanthropist. In 1893, she moved to New York City. She attended the National Conservatory of Music, eventually working with the Oriental American Opera Company. Returning to Florida in 1896, she graduated from Florida Baptist Academy and taught school for 16 years. Active in business, she used her profits to help people in Jacksonville. She started an African American orphanage and a nursing home for the elderly, taught classes at the county prison, and developed the Clara White Mission to aid the homeless, among many other humanitarian endeavors.
