FLOR500, Garden 198 David Levy Yulee, Politician and Railroad Owner (1810–1886) A native of the Virgin Islands, Yulee’s family moved to Florida early in his life. He practiced law in St. Augustine, and was elected to the U.S. Senate as the first Jewish member, although soon after converted to Christianity. Yulee led the campaign for the construction of the Fernandina to Cedar Key Railroad from Gainesville to Cedar Key in 1859–1860. It was the first railway to cross Florida. With the coming of the Civil War, he resigned from the Senate and devoted himself to his extensive railroad interests.

David Levy Yulee, Politician and Railroad Owner

(1810–1886)
