FLOR500, Garden 211 Lawton Mainor Chiles Jr., Governor (1930–1998) A native of Lakeland and veteran of the Korean War, Lawton Chiles was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 1958 and Florida Senate in 1966. During his successful campaign for United States senator in 1970 he walked 1,003-miles over 91-days across Florida from Pensacola to Key West. He earned the nickname "Walkin' Lawton." He served three terms in the Senate. In 1990 he was elected Florida governor where he served until his death in office.
