FLOR500, Garden 222 Sam Gibbons, WW II Army Officer and Politician (1920–2012) Tampa native, Sam Gibbons was a paratrooper in World War II, and among the first to parachute into France on D-Day. He served in both the Florida House of Representatives and the State Senate, and got a bill passed that created the University of South Florida. In 1962, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and became known as a strong advocate for better education and health care, especially for children. He never lost an election, and retired from the House in 1996.
