FLOR500, Garden 23 Jacqueline Cochran, Aviator (ca. 1906–1980) Jacqueline Cochran was raised in the Florida panhandle. She learned to fly in 1932, and in 1937, she set three major flight records. She organized the Women’s Flying Training Detachment (WFTD) to train female civilian aviators to help in the war effort. This squadron later merged with the Women Airforce Service Pilots. As director, Cochran helped train 1,074 women who flew more than 60 million miles in support of the U.S. war effort.
