Lykes joined the family business, Lykes Brothers, Inc., and later led the firm, based in Tampa. He was president of the Florida Cattlemen's Association in 1968. Lykes Brothers is a major agribusiness in Florida. The ranch now spreads over 330,000 acres. The operation remains in the family’s hands, and also includes forestry, citrus, and sugar cane.
