FLOR500, Garden 235 Thomas Buchanan McGuire, Jr., World War II Pilot (1920–1945) Thomas McGuire grew up in Sebring, Florida. He enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in 1941. Serving in the Pacific Theater from 1943 to 1945, he was credited with downing 38 Japanese planes, making him the second leading American fighter pilot of World War II. McGuire died in a crash while aiding a fellow pilot on January 7, 1945, and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in March 1946. McGuire Air Force Base, in his home state of New Jersey, was named in his honor.
