FLOR500, Garden 242 Henry Bradley Plant, Businessman, Railroad Owner (1819–1899) After the Civil War, Henry Plant helped to rebuild the railroad system throughout the South. In January 1884, his Jacksonville, Tampa, & Key West Railroad reached Tampa. Plant extended the line to Port Tampa City and developed the port as a major deepwater shipping hub. Plant’s railroads and steamships made it easier for Florida’s products to reach distant markets. Tampa became the most important terminus for passengers and cargo on Florida’s west coast. Plant also built resort hotels, and his landmark Tampa Bay Hotel is now the University of Tampa.
