FLOR500, Garden 245 Dr. Mary Jane Safford, Physician (1834–1891) Dr. Mary Safford was the first practicing woman physician in Florida. She was born in Illinois and served as a nurse during the Civil War. She later studied medicine in New York and Europe, and practiced in Chicago and New England. She also taught at the Boston University College of Medicine, but moved to Tarpon Springs because of health problems. She practiced in Tarpon Springs until her death in 1891.

Dr. Mary Safford was the first practicing woman physician in Florida. She was born in Illinois and served as a nurse during the Civil War.
