FLOR500, Garden 247 Robert W. Saunders, Civil Rights Activist (1921–2003) Robert W. Saunders was born in west Tampa, and attended Bethune-Cookman College. In 1952, he became Florida NAACP field director, a post he held 1966. Saunders was involved in every major civil rights initiative in Florida, including desegregation of schools, public beaches and housing, equal pay for black teachers, and voter registration. He next served as chief of civil rights for the Southeast region of the U.S. Office of Equal Opportunity. He returned to Tampa in 1976 to lead the Office of Equal Opportunity for Hillsborough County until he retired in 1988.

Robert W. Saunders, Civil Rights Activist
