A prominent businessman, Juan de la Rua was mayor of Pensacola in 1822 and hosted the first legislative council of the new U.S. territory of Florida at his home. He served as a member of the territorial council for several years. He also served in the Florida Militia’s First Regiment as a colonel, and was City Clerk for the City of Pensacola in Exile during the Civil War when City business was conducted in Greenville, Alabama.
