By 1882, he employed sixty people to make sugar mills, kettles and boring machines. Doig invented a typesetting machine and a cotton gin, besides creating an engine so small that it covered a dime. He also built the first complete locomotive in Florida. His home is preserved at 708 East University Avenue in Gainesville.
