FLOR500, Garden 281 Helen Ellerbe, Librarian (1907–1995) Helen Ellerbe was University of Florida librarian, and the first women faculty member to receive military leave in 1942. She served from 1942 to 1944, and designed and managed a library at Camp Murphy in south Florida. She also founded the Alachua County Historical Society, and was active in many civic organizations, winning the Gainesville Area Woman of Distinction Award in 1987.
