FLOR500, Garden 290 Zora Neal Hurston, Folklorist, Anthropologist, Author (1891–1960) Zora Neal Hurston was an American folklorist and anthropologist. Hurston wrote four novels and more than 50 published short stories, plays, and essays, she is best known for her 1937 novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. Her family moved to Eatonville, Florida, one of the first all-Black towns to be incorporated in the United States. In the late 1930s, Hurston signed on for the position of Junior Interviewer with the Federal Writers’ Project (FWP). In August of 1939, Hurston went on a recording expedition to the turpentine camps in Cross City.
