FLOR500, Garden 297 Carl Kuhl, Aviator (ca. 1888–ca.1950s/60s) Carl Kuhl’s interest in aviation came after watching flight contests at the Orlando Fair. He trained at the Sloane School of Aviation in New York and became the first Floridian with a pilot’s license. In 1915–16, he designed, built, and successfully flew the second airplane in the state. He also trained pilots that fought in World War I and World War II. He served and retired as a Captain for United Air Lines.
