FLOR500, Garden 303 Chris Matheson and Sarah Hamilton Matheson, Mayor; Donor of the Matheson House (Chris Matheson: ?–1952; Sarah Hamilton Matheson: 1901–1996) Chris Matheson was mayor of Gainesville from 1910 to 1917, and then served a term in the state legislature. He led Gainesville into the modern age by establishing a fire station, post office, streetlights, library, paving of streets and installing a sewer system. He later served as a minister in Shawnee, Oklahoma where he met and married Sarah Hamilton. When he retired, the two returned to Gainesville. Sarah donated the Matheson House and all of its contents to the Matheson Museum in 1994.
