Mallory, Confederate Secretary of the Navy (1811–1873) Raised in Key West, Stephen Mallory studied law and entered politics, serving as a state senator, U.S. senator, and during the Civil War, Confederate Secretary of the Navy. He was the only Confederate cabinet member to remain in his original appointment for the entire war. After the war, he joined a Pensacola law firm. Mallory is buried in St. Michael’s Cemetery, an historic cemetery in Pensacola.
