In 1906, he was appointed postmaster at a small post office on Garniers Bayou. After his death, Julia succeeded him as postmaster, serving more than 28 years. The post office is now the Garniers Post Office Museum, in the Heritage Park and Cultural Center complex in Fort Walton Beach.
