Perry, Governor (1831–1889) Although born and raised in the North, Perry joined the Confederate army, serving as Captain of the Pensacola Rifle Rangers and Colonel of the 2nd Florida Regiment. He fought in numerous battles and was promoted to Brigadier General. He returned to his law practice in Pensacola after the war and entered politics. In 1885, he was elected the 14th governor of Florida. A proponent of education, he established the State Board of Education. Gov. Perry is buried in St. John’s Cemetery at Pensacola.
