FLOR500, Garden 82 John Sunday, Public Official, Businessman (1838–1925) The son of a white farmer and his black slave, John Sunday was given his freedom at birth by his father. He joined the Union army during the Civil War, serving in Louisiana and earning the rank of first sergeant. After the war, he returned to Pensacola where he worked as a Navy Yard mechanic, then a U.S. customs inspector, then purchased and operated a saloon and restaurant. Eventually, he started a construction and real estate business, becoming very prosperous. Sunday served in the Florida Legislature in 1874 during Reconstruction and as a city alderman from 1878 to 1881.
