FLOR500, Garden 85 The Walton Guard, Civil War Company (Stationed near The Narrows, 1861–1662) Soon after the outbreak of the Civil War, Captain William McPherson and his Confederate volunteer company, the Walton Guards (inducted in Walton County) established Camp Walton, on the mainland opposite “The Narrows” where Santa Rosa Sound enters Choctawhatchee Bay. The Walton Guards’ mission was to guard East Pass, the entrance from the Gulf to Choctawhatchee Bay. It served as the supply route to the Confederates in Pensacola blocked from the Gulf by the Union navy. The unit went on to participate in several battles of the Western Theater.
