Gilbert Barkowski, Cattleman An early cattleman in western Indian River County, Barkowski came to Fellsmere to dredge the canals for the Fellsmere Farms Land Development Company in 1911. He experimented with cross breeding purebred cattle with “scrub” cows. The resulting offspring displayed characteristics of early native stock with good bloodlines, suited to a variety of ranges and pastures.
