Stephen Crane, Author (1871–1900) Best known for the Civil War novel The Red Badge of Courage, Stephen Crane was a novelist, short story writer, poet and journalist. In 1896, while in route to Cuba to report on the Spanish-American War, the ship Crane was on, the Commodore, sunk.
