Matthias Day, Community Founder (1821–1904) An inventor and newspaper publisher from Ohio, Day traveled down the Halifax River and thought it would be a wonderful location to start a community. He purchased a large tract of land along the river in the hopes of founding small village along the intercoastal waterway just north of Ponce Inlet.
