Henry A. DeLand, Businessman (1834–1908) A prosperous businessman from New York, he saw the potential of Central Florida while visiting a relative. In 1876, he purchased a tract of land called Persimmon Hollow. He renamed the area after himself, and began promoting it as a place for wealthy northerners to spend the winter.
