Juan Ponce de León, Explorer (1474–1521) Landing somewhere along the east central coast of Florida in 1513, Juan Ponce de León called the area “La Florida,” giving our state its name. Ponce was a Spanish explorer and conqueror, and the first governor of Puerto Rico. During an attempt to establish a colony on Florida’s west coast in 1521, Ponce was attacked by Calusa Indians and later died of his injuries. FLOR500, Garden 340
