Jackie Robinson, Baseball Pioneer (1919–1972) On March 17, 1946, baseball player Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in professional sports in Daytona Beach. Robinson was playing for the Montreal Royals, a farm team for the Brooklyn Dodgers. The field where Robinson’s first professional game was played is now called Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
