Andrew Turnbull, Businessman (1718–1792) The British colony of New Smyrna was founded by Scotsman Andrew Turnbull in 1767. He arranged to bring 1,403 Greek, Minorcan, and Italian settlers to the colony, but by the time the ships arrived in Florida, 148 people had died because of the rough seas and sickness. By 1777, many of the remaining settlers revolted and fled to St. Augustine. FLOR500, Garden 350
